Davenport University is seeking applicants for its prestigious scholarship named for former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford, who served as an instructor and assistant football coach at the university. The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship is granted to a highly distinguished student pursuing a four-year degree in business, technology or health professions at Davenport’s W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids.

Davenport University has been chosen by Cisco Systems as the only university in Michigan to pilot its Workforce Retraining Initiative (WRI). President Barack Obama highlighted this important initiative in a speech at a Town Hall meeting at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan on Tuesday. Three Michigan community colleges -- Henry Ford Community College, Oakland Community College and Macomb Community College -- also will serve as launch sites.

Davenport University recently sent 26 students from the W. A. Lettinga Campus in Caledonia Township to the Business Professionals of America’s (BPA) 43^rd National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas on June 16 - 21.  More than 3,000 students from several universities across the United States participated in the competition.

(JA) and Davenport University today announced that the JA Titan Business Challenge will take place on Tuesday, March 31 2009 at the Davenport University Student Center in Grand Rapids. JA is seeking additional companies to participate in this event and to sponsor student teams.

Davenport University will present its Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award to Ambassador Peter F. Secchia at its 12th annual Excellence in Business Dinner Gala on May 8 at DeVos Place. The black-tie fund-raiser for scholarships also will feature keynote speaker Ted Koppel, former host of ABC TV’s “Nightline.”

Davenport University will host a free Career Fair on Wednesday, March 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the W. A. Lettinga campus at 6191 Kraft Avenue S.E. (Near M-6 at Broadmoor.) The career fair will provide job-seekers with the opportunity to meet potential employers, ask questions, gather helpful information and submit resumes. The Career Fair is free and open to the public.

The well-known names of Fred and Lena Meijer will grace a residence hall on the campus of Davenport University. The five-story, apartment-style building houses more than 100 students and opened in the fall of 2006 as the second residence hall on campus. The Fred and Lena Meijer Residence Hall is so named in appreciation of the Meijers’ donation of approximately 16 wooded acres of land that adjoin the southern border of the existing 53-acre campus.

Student and faculty volunteers from Davenport University will kick off this year’s free income tax preparation sessions on Monday, January 26. Free assistance will be available to low- and middle- income tax-filers (less than $42,000 in total family income) in the academic building at Davenport University’s campus (6191 Kraft Avenue, S.E. near M-6 at Broadmoor) and Fulton Street location (415 East Fulton St.).
