DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR GERALD R. FORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Davenport University is seeking applicants for its prestigious scholarship named for former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford, who served as an instructor and assistant football coach at the university. The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship is granted to a highly distinguished student pursuing a four-year degree in business, technology or health professions at Davenport’s W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids.
Gerald Ford, a former Grand Rapids resident, granted permission before his death in 2006 for Davenport University to name a scholarship in his honor. The full scholarship includes tuition, room and board, study abroad, and fees and textbooks for four years.
“This scholarship, Davenport’s most prestigious, is a fitting tribute to the legacy of President Ford and will be a truly lifelong mark of distinction for all student recipients,” said Davenport University President Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D.
Davenport University awarded the first Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship in 2009 to incoming freshman Lauren Anderson, a highly motivated student working toward a four-year degree in health professions.
“I was honored to be the first recipient of the Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship” she said. “I knew Davenport was the perfect school for me due to the small class sizes, innovative degrees in health professions and faculty with real-world experience.”
Qualifications for the scholarship include a minimum 3.75 high school grade point average and a minimum ACT score of 31. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.70 must be maintained for renewal of the scholarship annually for a maximum of four years. All applicants are also required to write an essay describing how they have upheld and will uphold the values and character of former President Ford.
