Apply for a federal grant
These are currently two grants funded by the Federal government for college funding. If you receive grant money, Davenport will apply the funds to your student account against tuition, fees and book charges. Grants do not have to be repaid.

Eligibility
Eligibility is determined using a standard formula to produce a Student Aid Index (SAI) number. This number, and whether or not you are eligible for a grant, will appear on your FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS). More details about all of these programs are available at www.studentaid.gov.
This grant is awarded only to students who have not earned a bachelor's degree. For the 2024-2025 aid year, Pell awards range from about $740 to $7,395, based on Federal appropriations. Amounts received depend on several factors, including:
- SAI number
- full-time or part-time status
- length of time attended during the academic year
For part-time students who are eligible and receive reduced Pell Grant amounts, Davenport will disburse funds according to enrollment status. The Pell Grant is limited to a lifetime use of 600% (12 full-time semesters)-for more information about this please see the section at the bottom of this page, Lifetime Limit for Pell Grant.

- How do I know the amount I have used?
- By logging into studentaid.gov, you can view the total Pell Grant amount you have received from any institution of higher education you attended and at which you received Pell Grant. Currently, NSLDS does not have your Pell Grant usage calculated in a percentage for your viewing.
- If I can’t see my % used online, how can I know how much I have used?
- Here is a chart to help understand how the percentages are calculated to estimate how much you have used.

- Will I ever be able to find out what my actual percentage used is?
- Our Student Financial Services Counselors will help you determine your current percentage used.
- But my SAI is in the Pell awarding range?
- Even though you may have a Pell-eligible SAI, if you have used your 600% (12 semesters) lifetime limit of Pell Grant, you are no longer eligible.
- But I have been out of school for years…..
- The federal Pell Grant program began over 50 years ago and since this change limits the use of Pell during a student’s lifetime, all awards in your history of receiving the Pell Grant are included when determining your percentage used.
- Are there alternative funding options?
- If you have reached your lifetime Pell eligibility some options of other funding are Davenport Scholarships, Foundation Scholarships, Outside Scholarships and Work-Study opportunities. - How can I make sure I finish my degree before I use my lifetime Pell eligibility?

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)
This grant is awarded only to students with exceptional financial need who have not earned a bachelor's degree.
- FSEOG is awarded to those with the lowest Student Aid Index (SAI). Award amounts are $1,000 for each school year. Eligibility is based on the student's SAI and overall need. Students enrolled less than half time will receive a prorated amount.
- Priority is given to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. FSEOG has limited funds, and students are awarded based on file completion date of the FAFSA.
Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship (CFH) and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant (IASG)
The FAFSA Simplification Act changes eligibility for what were formerly called Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants (IASG) and Children of Fallen Heroes (CFH) Awards as well as the resulting award amount. Beginning with the 2024-25 award year, students who meet the eligibility requirements for Pell Grants under the Special Rule in HEA Section 401(c) will receive Max Pell, regardless of their calculated SAI.
To receive a Pell Grant based on eligibility under the Special Rule, a student must be:
- The child of a parent or guardian who died in the line of duty while (a) serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001; or (b) actively serving as and performing the duties of a public safety officer; and
- Less than 33 years old as of the January 1 prior to the award year for which the applicant is applying (e.g., for the 2024-25 award year, a student must be less than 33 years old as of January 1, 2024, to be eligible).
Students who were eligible for and received IASG funds OR received Pell Grant funds based on IASG or CFH eligibility criteria for the 2023-24 award year but are not eligible for Pell Grant funds under the Special Rule beginning with the 2024-25 award year are eligible to receive Pell Grant funds based on prior IASG or CFH eligibility criteria. Students remain eligible if they receive at least one disbursement of funds from the IASG or CFH programs during the award year.
