Network Management and Security, bachelor of science

Build expertise to install, administer, upgrade and troubleshoot computer networks

Succeed on the front lines of an organization by managing the daily operations of its networking technology. This degree gives you the hands on experience needed to build an impressive command of technology. With a BS in Network Management and Security, build the expertise required to install, administer, upgrade, and troubleshoot computer networks.   In addition to critical technical skills, your coursework provides you with the teambuilding, project management and leadership skills necessary to succeed at the front lines, whether it be managing the daily operations of an organization’s networking technology or mentoring a staff of network technicians.
Davenport is a registered Cisco Networking Academy with a curriculum that aligns with employer’s technology and required skills. You will build expertise to install, administer, upgrade and troubleshoot computer networks. In addition, you will learn teambuilding, project management and leadership skills necessary to succeed. Learn in well-equipped networking labs with the most up to date equipment Davenport is also a member of the ASC Alliance. This means we train Cisco instructors at other institutions. To highlight our successful program further, Davenport’s students have taken 1st place at the National level in the Business Professionals of America competition for Networking Technologies since 2013.

Certification Course Credit | CERTIFICATION PAGE

Davenport offers course credit for specific certifications you may hold. Obtaining a certificate demonstrates your knowledge in a specific technology area. In addition, it also indicates your dedication and motivation to professional development. For these reasons, certification exams are highly recommended after completing certificate related courses in Davenport's technology programs. See our certification page for additional information.

After completing the core courses in your Network Management & Design degree program,  Davenport offers three specialties to choose from to complete your degree. Specialties include the following:

Advance Cisco Networking:
Plan, configure and verify the implementation of complex enterprise switching solutions. Topics will include advanced switching, secure WANs, advanced routing and optimization. Courses prepare you for various Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification exams.

Network Security: 
Develop your skills in securing infrastructure, vulnerability assessment, information security and disaster recovery. Topics include risk analysis, architecture components of an incident response plan, legal and public relations implications of security and privacy issues, and the framework of a disaster recovery plan.

Server Administration:
Plan, deploy, and maintain server, desktop, and application virtualization. Topics cover the installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of a Microsoft SQL Server database management system. In addition, you will create and maintain users and groups, set up web, mail, and FTP services, and perform other UNIX/Linux server administration tasks.

Mathematics Minor

Davenport University offers the option of completing a mathematics minor. A mathematics minor is ideal for those who want a deeper and broader background in mathematics, and provides you with a competitive edge in the job market. Gain a solid foundation in applied mathematics that provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills for careers in technology. Speak with your advisor about adding this option to your degree plan.

Full Curriculum


The Network Management and Security program will prepare the graduate with the technical knowledge and skills that are required to design, install, administer, maintain, and secure network systems and computers. Students will learn to evaluate user needs, purchase and install hardware and software, design and administer networks, and implement security best practices. Hands-on coursework will provide more advanced networking and security skills in a variety of hardware and software environments. The courses in this program will cover topics directly related to the objectives of certification exams from Microsoft, Cisco, EC Council and CompTIA.

*Either NETW490 or TECH489 must be completed unless the experiential learning component is satisfied. An upper level technology substitution must be chosen if the experiential component is completed within a required course in the major.

**Consider adding the Mathematics Minor (MTHM) 23 credits with this degree program. One of the required math courses (MATH215) is required in the foundations, the other five courses could be taken as part of the Open Elective Credits.
