Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management

Program Mission

The mission of the MSHIIM program is to prepare graduates who are positioned to utilize information technology resources to manage health data in an information-driven healthcare environment. The MS in HIIM designs its curriculum to meet requirements of the accrediting bodies.

Program Learning Outcomes

1. Formulate guidelines for the management of data structure, data content, and information governance activities. 

2. Design policies related to the protection of information with regard to access, use, privacy and security. 

3. Propose solutions that impact organizational effectiveness utilizing informatics, data and data analytics.

4. Develop proposals to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of the revenue cycle and reimbursement processes. 

5. Create policies that best ensure compliance with health law and regulations. 

6. Compile information management strategies to enhance organizational management, innovation, and leadership.

Admission follows Davenport University's admission and progression policy as outlined in the Graduate Catalog.  

Program requirements and prerequisites 

All students admitted into the Davenport University Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management are expected to have a bachelor’s degree with the necessary undergraduate preparation in management, technology and statistics typically found in a health, technology, or business discipline.

All students are required to have the equivalent of the following courses at the undergraduate level prior to completing to the program. A grade of “C” or better must be earned in each course to show proficiency. These courses may be taken in conjunction with the Masters courses, but must be completed prior to the student’s final semester:

• Medical Terminology

• Anatomy & Physiology

• Pathophysiology & Pharmacology

Before taking 600-level courses, the following prerequisite courses may be required if a student has not already successfully completed equivalent courses or work experience. A grade of “C” or better must be earned in each foundational course to show proficiency. Prerequisite course hours are not included in the credits required for graduation.

Graduate-level foundational prerequisites:

• CISP547 Database Design

• HINT770 Clinical Vocabulary and Health Records (or equivalent undergraduate course)

• IAAS581 Information Security and Assurance

• STAT500 Statistics for Business

Admission requirements

Applicants are eligible for admission to the MS in HIIM program at Davenport University if they meet the following minimum requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or approved international with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 or better (on a 4.00 scale) is required. 
• Proof of successful completion of undergraduate courses in management, technology and statistics typically found in a health, technology or business discipline must be provided. 
• Applicants who are not prepared in these areas may be required to take appropriate undergraduate equivalent courses or prerequisite (500-level) courses. A current resume/CV inclusive of education, work experience and community service. 
• A 500 word statement of purpose 
  • Focus on the purpose of pursuing the MS in Health informatics and information management degree, past experiences and future expectations with this degree.
• The Admissions Committee may request a candidate interview before a final admissions decision.
• Students with an undergraduate degree in HIM from Davenport University, who have a GPA of 3.0 and are in good standing, are only required to complete a graduate application form for admission.  

Residency requirements

Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management (MS) Degree – A minimum of 30 semester credits, including the Capstone/Thesis course, must be completed at Davenport University; no transfer courses may be brought in after graduate credits have been earned at Davenport University.

Criminal background and drug screen policy

All students in the Davenport University College of Health Professions are required to submit to criminal background check and drug screening at the time of declaring a major in the COHP. The results of the Testing, which shall remain confidential, shall be used by the COHP to approve or disapprove of a Student for enrollment or continued enrollment in the COHP, and/or eligibility for training programs, clinical or practicum. The Testing shall be completed by registering for the appropriate course and completing the entire testing process in the course. Each student is responsible for acknowledging and explaining positive Result(s) after completing the process. A student will be dismissed from the COHP if he or she refuses to consent to the Testing. The cost of the Testing is the part of the course fee and is the responsibility of the student.
